Minnie Louis Anderson Young Scholarship

After making more than 100 awards to deserving students, the Minnie Louise Anderson Young (MLAY) Scholarship Program has come to its natural end.  The final Scholarship funds were awarded in 2022. 

St. George's also sponsors the Mary B. Smith (MBS) Book Award Program, which helps St. George’s students attending accredited two- or four-year colleges, universities, or technical/vocational institutions, pay for books, supplies, and essential educational materials. The program offers a renewable award of $500 per school year.

The award was established in June 1998 to honor the late Mary B. Smith, a former Director of Christian Education at St. George’s. The program is administered by the six-member MBS Book Award Committee.

Any student who has been involved in the St. George’s Christian Education/Sunday School Program and/or served in a church ministry or organization is eligible. The program also grants awards to college students who are the children, grandchildren, or legal wards of St. George’s Church members who have offered sustained leadership, ministry, or volunteer service to the church. (Applicants in this category may require written verification from parish records, clergy, or ministry leadership).

Students can apply at the beginning of their freshman year in college, and may reapply annually for a maximum of four years. Acceptable applications include school documentation showing current enrollment.

Outside of St. George's, Takoma Park Presbyterian Church (TPPC) administers the Stanley A. and Wilhelmina Jashemski Memorial Scholarship Fund. Students from the District, Maryland, and Virginia for whom college might present financial hardship are encouraged to apply. They need not be members of TPPC.

Prospective applicants should:

—be active members of a faith community;

—be undergraduates with a 3.5 cumulative grade point average;

—pursue liberal arts studies;

—show commitment to social and civic concern;

—have financial need.
