The Rev. Kent Marcoux
The Rev. Kent Marcoux brings to St. George’s twelve years of experience in ordained ministry, together with 25 years of professional experience in financial management, development finance and entrepreneurship—much of it dedicated to strengthening the performance, social impact and sustainability of local institutions effecting social change.
Fr. Kent grew up in New Orleans, where his father and grandfather were also Episcopal priests. After college he worked as a banker in New York, then spent three years in Kenya as a Peace Corps volunteer working with microenterprises. He returned to pursue graduate work at Yale, where he earned degrees from Berkeley Divinity School, Yale Divinity School and the Yale School of Management. Following his graduation Fr. Kent moved to the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood and soon began attending St. Stephen and the Incarnation. Fr. Kent was ordained a priest at St. Stephen’s in 1999, then served as a member of the clergy group for five years. During this time, he also worked as Program Director at the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED) in Washington, where he led the Enterprise Development area, including the areas of entrepreneurship, development finance and microenterprise.
In 2003 Fr. Kent moved to Baltimore to become the first Executive Director of a start-up CDFI (community development financial institution) serving low-wealth people and communities of the Baltimore region by offering loans, technical assistance, and innovative products and services that build wealth and create opportunity. In 2008, Fr. Kent returned to Washington and served as Assistant Rector at Grace Episcopal Church, Silver Spring, where he worked closely with the Rev. Janice Robinson. At Grace, Fr. Kent led the parish’s youth ministries and served as Chaplain of the affiliated day school, while also sharing with Rev. Janice the liturgical roles, and broader leadership and management of the parish. Fr. Kent also served as Priest-in-Charge during the leadership transition following Rev. Janice’s retirement.
More recently, Fr. Kent served as Director of Finance at Jubilee Housing, a faith-based nonprofit providing affordable housing and supportive services to economically disadvantaged residents of the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Before coming to St. George’s, Fr. Kent served as Interim Associate Rector at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Washington.
Fr. Kent and Ellen Kennedy, a Washington native, were married at St. Stephen's in 2000. They are proud parents to Eli (12 years old) and Cali (8 years old), and they live happily in Takoma Park. Fr. Kent enjoys music, cooking for family and friends, and laughing a lot!
